Amber Luke began getting tattooed at 16. The ink now covers her face, throat, arms and most of her body. She has also had the whites of her eyes tattooed, a procedure she later said left her unable to see for three weeks.
Luke has explained how her collection grew and what the overall change means to her. She hasn’t given a public meaning for every design, so the visible details are easier to describe than to interpret.
Amber Luke’s first tattoos and the start of the timeline
Luke’s first tattoo appointment was when she was 16. In a 2023 interview with 7NEWS, she recalled getting her first three tattoos at that age. An earlier profile said she had three by 18 and chose her first larger piece around then. The accounts differ on the timing, but both place the start in her teens and describe a collection that grew in stages.
In the 2023 interview, she said she hadn’t expected to become so heavily tattooed. She was drawn to the whole studio experience: seeing the stencil, hearing the machines, sitting through the session and feeling proud of the finished piece. She has described the process, as well as the result, as part of what she enjoys.
At 20, she had her throat tattooed and began adding ink to her face. The change made her tattoos much harder to cover in everyday life, and she has described it as part of a personal shift in how she wanted to look.
Mandala, face and throat tattoos
The forehead mandala is one of Luke’s most recognizable designs. She called it a mandala in a 2021 episode of TRANSFORMED. Lettering, small symbols and ornamental shapes sit around it; the throat work continues under her jaw and joins the dense tattoos across her upper chest.
Luke hasn’t publicly explained every mark on her face, so a photograph can show the design but not what each symbol means to her. In her 2023 interview, she said the heavier phase began at 20, when she started on her face and throat. She has also spoken about how the change in her appearance affected how she saw herself. That’s the context she has shared, rather than a separate story for each tattoo.
The blue eye tattoos and the “Blue Eyes White Dragon” name
Luke has described tattooing her eyes blue as a milestone at 22. By 2018, profiles were already noting the vivid result. It also connects with the name she uses publicly, “Blue Eyes White Dragon.”
The procedure had a serious complication. Luke said the artist went too deep and she temporarily lost her sight for three weeks. In a 2019 interview reported by 7NEWS, she described it as feeling like shards of glass rubbing through her eye. She later said she didn’t regret the look, while calling it the most dangerous procedure she’d undergone. Both are part of her account: she likes the result, and the experience was frightening and physically risky. Eye tattooing is different from a skin tattoo, and her experience isn’t a recommendation.
Chest, arms and the move toward near-full coverage
Photos show dense black-and-grey work across Luke’s chest, shoulders, arms and torso. Larger shaded figures sit among geometric and ornamental patterns; smaller motifs and lettering fill spaces across her arms and hands. The collection has come together over many sessions.
Her estimates of the coverage have changed over time. Reports in 2019 put her at more than 200 tattoos. In 2023, she said up to 600 tattoos covered about 99 percent of her body, leaving the soles of her feet and the top of her head untouched for personal reasons. In 2026, she described the coverage as about 98 percent. These are estimates from different years, not a fixed count.
Photos show different sides of her body, and newer work can fill spaces between older pieces. The percentage depends on when it was given and what area a picture shows, so it’s best read as a point-in-time estimate.
What Luke has said her tattoos mean to her
In 7NEWS interviews, Luke has discussed body dysmorphia and wanting to feel happier with what she saw in the mirror. She has described tattooing as part of a wider process of self-discovery and taking ownership of her appearance. That’s her explanation of the overall change; it doesn’t tell us what each separate design means.
In a later interview, she said the look comforts her day to day and that she feels more confident in who she has become. Her official biography also describes the collection as a visual story built piece by piece. Neither statement means every motif marks a particular event.
Luke has also said the look draws criticism and can affect how strangers respond to her. Her tattoos are highly visible, but their personal meaning is hers to explain. It’s more accurate to stick with what she has shared than to guess from the face tattoos or the amount of coverage.
In the 2023 interview, Luke said she planned to fill remaining gaps on her back with black ink. By 2026, she was still discussing further body modifications and described tattooing as a lifelong commitment. The collection is ongoing, so exact counts and coverage estimates belong to the date she gave them.
